I've just read all this again and it reads like I'm now suggesting the "spacer" go inside the contentwrapper div The footer takes its position by apppearing relative to and clearing the floated divs which precede it..
I apologise for the length of the code that follows, but I've colored, commented and renamed the divs and added in extras to see if the "quirks" mentioned earlier can be avoided..
