After having seen this you are not astonished any more about Guantanamo, the secret CIA-prisons in Latvia, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Afghanistan and Iraq, and all the torture that happens there. This abuse has an evil basis which seems to be inherent since many decades of political culture in the USA.

I won't giveaway the plot, but there's enough of everything you'd want in a film of this genre'. One of my favorite "utility players" from the 30's's is Alan Baxter. Smooth, classy, a tad devious, sometimes sinister, a cold blooded killer, he was everything you'd want in an ensemble cast member.

He could also take the lead as he did a number of times. In Baxter's early years he'd been a stage-trained actor He was diagnosed with cancer in the 70's and passed away from it in at the Motion Picture Country Home.

Now,I am not a patriotic person. I find,as a country,America is very hypocritical,and it makes me sick,but I still care for my fellow man,and that is becoming more and more rare as time goes on. People just look out for themselves more often nowadays,and you just want to scream at them for their self-centered behavior. Gangs of New York is set in ,when gangs ran the streets of New York,and the government couldn't or would not,whatever you prefer gain control of the city that would one day be one of the greatest cities of the world.

Amsterdam is put in a reform school,but when he grows up,he plots to avenge his father's murder by getting close to Bill and killing him. In joining Bill's gang,however,Amsterdam gets to know the man personally. Now,Bill is someone Amsterdam,and we as a viewing audience, should hate without question. But he is the interesting thing:Bill isn't unlikable. Even in all that he has done,and will do and he does plenty,as this is an almost 3-hour film ,Amsterdam finds he actually is starting to respect the man,especially when it concerns Amsterdam's father,who Bill considers as "the only person he ever killed worth remembering.

Bill soon discovers who Amsterdam really is,and he won't take kindly to someone in his gang who has it out for him. And so,Amsterdam and Bill,by the film's climax,will find themselves on opposing sides in what will shape the future of "their great city".

Gangs is a wonderful film,filled with terrific performances,amazing visuals,great direction,a solid screenplay,filled with depth and themes,and,overall,a powerful message:"in the end,how significant are the quarrels of man's past? For in the end,time will fade even legend. You will be shocked and amazed.

The world of film is rife with gangs battling for the soul of the viewer. He finds a story with characters of excess, and peoples them with actors of excess.

The story spins not from the people or situation, but from the excess itself. This is not native to cinema, it is an immigrant trend, imported into the world of film. The camera literally is attached to the usually men. Spielberg runs a similar gang. Opposed are a collection of gangs that build films first from cinematic vision, then enfold story and characters -- the different visions and enfolding techniques differentiate these gangs, but they all hate the interlopers from literature who do illustrated books.

But with this film our man Martin enters the world of cinema first before doing anything else and effects a conversion. In this film, the star is the tone and feel of the place, and the forces surrounding that place: the characters are third in the hierarchy. It is a masterful and welcome switch of allegiance.

Oh, we have a story, the ordinary insipid stuff about a girl and bruised suitors, about political power, about revenge. And we have at least one actor who knows how to control and channel excess now that Deniro is retired from real acting.

It is what everyone will talk about, but none of that really matters. What matters is Scorsese's new eye. This camera understands the situation while creating it. In the past, his camera has been attached to the man. Here, it is attached to the space instead: most spectacularly the caves under the brewery and in the five points intersection. The eye creates the situation first -- cinematically -- in which the characters move.

That's because longtime editor Schoonmaker has had a similar epiphany and assembles the shots around a scene and not a face. Scorsese is no longer the leader of a gang, but a member of the ones that matter, situated.

Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 4: Worth watching. Superb fictional but historically-valid account of gang warfare that shaped New York city in the 19th century. A must-see. As the historical featurette on the DVD shows, the time, place, characters and events are predominantly real, New York in the period between about and was the dirtiest and most dangerous place in the USA, perhaps in the whole world.

The five points area, near what is now Little Italy and Chinatown, drew immigrants, primarily Irish, and freshly-released convicts. Rival volunteer firefighter groups would often fight each other and loot the burning buildings. There really was a 'Boss Tweed' and a 'Bill the Butcher. There were a whole host of rival gangs, and being part of a gang was essential for survival.

The riots protesting the draft really did result in almost destroying New York. So, what we have in this movie is a very closely historical look and feel of that era, interwoven with a fictional story. He creates an unforgettable character that is eloquent, sometimes funny, always terrifying, and often deadly to his opponents. Leonardo DiCaprio is very strong as the young man 'Amsterdam' whose father Liam Neeson had been killed years earlier in the gang brawl that opens the movie.

Cameron Diaz plays Jenny who has connections to both Bill and Amsterdam. The picture and sound on the DVD are first-rate, with either a Dolby 5. The movie is long, so the only extra I watched was the historical one, and it is a treasure. I like this movie and rate it highly.

Bill was the vicious leader of the 'Nativist' gang that wanted to keep out the foreign immigrants, especially the Irish who they considered even lower than the black former slaves.
